ast minute guests were hurried into the church pews as the Mom struggled to hold back the tears and the groomsmen stretched their tuxedo collars and straightened up each other's ties. The bride's guests sat on the left side and the groom's sat on the right. The pianist plinked through the Wedding Song and everyone stood up and craned their necks to watch the bridesmaids walk slowly up the aisle. The real show was the flower girl and the bride herself. With all her strength, the bride was holding her face taut to keep from bursting into tears on what should be one of the happier days in her life. The preacher pontificated through stoic vows and then pronounced them man and wife.

Ah yes, the Hill Country wedding. In the reception hall just past the guest book was a table over flowing with gifts. No doubt some were dishes, hand tools… and three varieties of steam irons. Here is your chance to make a real difference for the newlyweds! Why not start a down payment fund for their first house? You can "quarterback" the account, set it up in their names, and solicit certain family member and friends to contribute. Like you, they have been scratching their heads wondering what to give the newlyweds and some will jump at the chance when you make it easy for them. With school loans and bills and tougher underwriting standards requiring larger down payments and more closing expenses, it can be a real challenge for newlyweds to purchase their first house. Have a special group of friends or certain family circles pitch in and they will all contribute something worthwhile for years to come. You have to admit, that would be much better than giving them the 2^nd or 3^rd steam iron like old Uncle Joe and Bubba gave them.
